Soapstone is widely used and is a well-known material for people living on the east coast. Many homes there have soapstone countertops that have been in their kitchen for over 100 years! Here on the west coast, many people don't know much about soapstone and how great of a product it is, but most of us have seen it in our High School science class. Remember the black countertop the Bunsen burners sat on?

Soapstone is a metamorphic rock that consists of talc, steatite, magnesite, quartz, and other magnesium rich minerals and it is quarried like granite and marble. The talc found in soapstone is soft to the touch, which gives the smooth feeling of rubbing a piece of dry soap. Thus the name was derived - "Soap" Stone. We only use Grade A, which is the hardest and the best quality soapstone available. Soapstone is the only natural stone that is non-porous. This means that you can put raw foods on the countertop without worrying about bacteria growth. Soapstone, unlike marble and granite, never needs sealing. It is very green friendly- No off gassing! Soapstone has often been referred to as "Nature's best gift to your home". It is a natural quarried stone that is completely recyclable from blocks to slabs to tiles to ice cubes and anything along the way. Even the dust can be used for grout. This avoids having to mine and thus reduce other grout materials. NOTHING NEEDS TO BE SENT TO A LANDFILL. In addition, pieces of soapstone that are being removed or replaced from old buildings can be reused with minimal effort and restoration. It does not etch from harsh chemicals, lemon, red wine, and vinegar. High degrees of heat will not harm the stone, which means it can be used in a variety of heat applications including: fireplaces, stoves, and heaters. Unparalleled heat retention improves fireplace efficiency and slowly radiates the heat for hours. Soapstone comes in two base colors (before oiling): green gray and blue gray. Upon installation, the stone can be oiled with mineral oil to add shine, or left to age naturally. Mineral oil will bring out a charcoal to black color. The natural lighter quartz veining becomes more vivid against the dark background. The ageless beauty of soapstone is at home in any design style and will be an asset to any project. Soapstone is always a 3cm (1.25") product.
