Butcher Block
Every chef wants butcher block countertops in their kitchen. You will never have to use a cutting board again! Butcher block adds warmth and timeless beauty to your kitchen. It can easily blend well with any design taste; from traditional to vintage to rustic to contemporary. Go green and try butcher block countertops made from bamboo. Butcher block countertops are made out of thick strips of hardwood glued together to form one solid piece. Popular wood choices for butcher block countertops are: maple, oak, cherry, and walnut, but any type of wood can be made into a butcher block countertop. When considering butcher block countertops, you need to decide if the countertop is for aesthetics or if you intend to cut on them. A butcher block that is sealed cannot be used for cutting directly on and will allow water damage to occur. The knife can ruin the sealer and leave scratches that cannot be easily sanded away. The sealer, however, does protect the countertop from water and helps the wood to maintain an even color. An unfinished or oil-finished butcher block is the best choice for cutting and chopping. Any stains or scratches on the countertop can be sanded away. A disadvantage of an unsealed butcher block is that it can warp or turn black from excess water, so areas near the sink and water supply should be sealed.
We also offer butcher block tops for kitchen islands of any size you may have in your home. We carry a variety of pre-made islands from Lyn Designs. They come in various sizes and shapes and boast plenty of storage and drawer space. Please see our "Islands and Vanities" page for pictures.

Soap Stone
Soapstone is widely used and is a well-known material for people living on the east coast. Many homes there have soapstone countertops that have been in their kitchen for over 100 years! Here on the west coast, many people don't know much about soapstone and how great of a product it is, but most of us have seen it in our High School science class. Remember the black countertop the Bunsen burners sat on?
Soapstone is a metamorphic rock that consists of talc, steatite, magnesite, quartz, and other magnesium rich minerals and it is quarried like granite and marble. The talc found in soapstone is soft to the touch, which gives the smooth feeling of rubbing a piece of dry soap. Thus the name was derived - "Soap" Stone. We only use Grade A, which is the hardest and the best quality soapstone available. Soapstone is the only natural stone that is non-porous. This means that you can put raw foods on the countertop without worrying about bacteria growth. Soapstone, unlike marble and granite, never needs sealing. It is very green friendly- No off gassing! Soapstone has often been referred to as "Nature's best gift to your home". It is a natural quarried stone that is completely recyclable from blocks to slabs to tiles to ice cubes and anything along the way. Even the dust can be used for grout. This avoids having to mine and thus reduce other grout materials. NOTHING NEEDS TO BE SENT TO A LANDFILL. In addition, pieces of soapstone that are being removed or replaced from old buildings can be reused with minimal effort and restoration. It does not etch from harsh chemicals, lemon, red wine, and vinegar. High degrees of heat will not harm the stone, which means it can be used in a variety of heat applications including: fireplaces, stoves, and heaters. Unparalleled heat retention improves fireplace efficiency and slowly radiates the heat for hours. Soapstone comes in two base colors (before oiling): green gray and blue gray. Upon installation, the stone can be oiled with mineral oil to add shine, or left to age naturally. Mineral oil will bring out a charcoal to black color. The natural lighter quartz veining becomes more vivid against the dark background. The ageless beauty of soapstone is at home in any design style and will be an asset to any project. Soapstone is always a 3cm (1.25") product. Please take a look at our "Gallery" page to view our soapstone kitchens.
Soapstone, although a hard material, is easy to cut without using professional equipment. In fact, we offer DIY soapstone so that you can cut and/or install your very own countertops. Call us today!
